Panathinaikos appointed retired politician for president

Panathinaikos surprisingly chose a lawyer and retired politician, Nikos Constantopoulos to chair the club on Tuesday, a decision that was immediately greeted with disbelief and anger by the champions’ fans.
In the board meeting that had as its exclusive objective to appoint a successor to Nikolas Pateras, majority shareholder Yiannis Vardinoyiannis proposed the candidacy of the 68-year-old lawyer famous for leading the leftist Synaspismos party from 1993 to 2004.
“I take Panathinaikos’s decision to appoint me as president as a decision to recreate football. I am interested in unity and groupwork. Panathinaikos needs everybody,” said Constantopoulos.
Panathinaikos fans flooded the Athens airwaves and sports websites on Tuesday evening with messages of protest, suggesting they would not renew their season tickets.
