Music legend Mikis Theodorakis celebrated his 85th birthday yesterday! Last night a special musical gala coined “85 Years Mikis Thodorakis” was performed in his honor at The Lykabetos Theater in Athens. Hosted by Alexis Kostalas, many leading singers sang Theodorakis’ favorite songs in a tribute to the brilliant composer.
Born on July 29, 1925 on the Greek island of Chios, Mikis Theodorakis is best known throughout the world for his international hit “Zorba’s Dance”. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries Mr. Theodorakis has held a distinct position in the intellectual and musical realm due to his artistic creativity, political stance and dynamic life. He has consistently lobbied for international human rights during his supreme musical career, even in the most turbulent political climates. To celebrate his 85th birthday, Theodorakis’ exclusive publisher Schott Music has delivered a wide range of new compositions to accompany his already established and extraordinary body of work.
Arriving at The Lykabetos Theater surrounded by family and friends, a beaming Mikis Theodorakis received a large red gift and a beautiful seven tiered white birthday cake. During the musical tribute, Mr. Theodorakis never took his eyes off the stage and sang along as his enthusiasts serenaded him with melodies. “85 Years Mikis Theododrakis” was an amazing performance filled with love and gratitude and was well received by all.
