Minister of National Defense, Mr Evangelos Venizelos, indirectly called for the use of common defense instruments that the European Union acquires the in matters of defense of national borders, witch that is at the frontiers of Europe, such as those in the Aegean and the Mediterranean.
During the informal meeting of Defense Ministers of the EU in Ghent, Belgium, Mr Venizelos, stood in favor of the ‘common tanks in defense instruments’ (pooling &sharing) proposal. While posing the question as to whether they will be used only for European shipments such as the naval operation ATALANTA to deal with the pirates in Somalia or if they can be used for national purposes and in particular for the protection of national borders, which are also those of the EU.
After stating a first set the General ’strategic problems of the EU, even after the new institutional framework of the Lisbon Treaty that has still not found its way on to the international scene and has not formulated a visible security and defense policy,’ he went on to mention problems faced by countries such as Greece, with large defense expenditure.
Mr Venizelos, said this is due to the fact that there is a detected regional threat and a low sense of external security in relation to other EU countries.
