Greece Toughens Anti-Smoking Regulations

The government of Greece is going to table on Wednesday new stricter measures concerning those who smoke in their cars while children under 12 years old are inside. The fines are going to be even stricter for those who violate the measures ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 euros or even a decertification of their driving license.
Greek Health Minister Andreas Loverdos has stated his determination to pass the new measure and may even enlist the help of the local police stations in order to patrol roads around primary schools so as to detect any drivers who violate the law.Mr. Loverdos explained that: “the anti-smoking package was aimed at reducing children’s exposure and access to cigarettes and tobacco products.
According to the Deputy Mayor of Athens Andreas Papadakis, as of October 1st, only five tickets have been handed out for the violation in Athens.  According to local police stations, the majority of venues in all Greek cities have fully complied with the new measures.  The establishments have administered anti-smoking signs and removed all ashtrays from tables. “Incident Reports Books” are still pending at the municipal police stations around the country, and when the violations are over than four, the owners may lose their license.
