Murderer Selianakis Escapes from Prison, Commits Suicide

Vaggelis Selianakis, a prison runway from Crete was found dead in his hideout.  He was hiding in the village of Arxontiki in Rethymnon, yesterday morning. The man was wanted by police for 15 years after he escaped from the Alikarnassos Prison in 1994. He had been convicted with life sentence for two murders. He was also the main suspect for five other murders in the past, the last two held between 2009-2010.
Lately it has been known that the notorious killer was visiting a house in the village of Arxoniki. Police who watched the house over the last 25 days, finally monitored Selianakis entering yesterday evening. There were two other women, a widow mother, who is said to have relations with the dead and her 27-year-old daughter. The police initially didn’t make a move, in order to protect the two women. The next morning, as the 50-year- old widow left, police surrounded the house and asked the man to surrender. Luckily, they also managed to take away quickly the daughter, after she came out of the house to see what was going on.
After that, a crescendo of gunfire took place for several minutes, with Selianakis first opening fire. Policemen threw a stun grenade inside the house. Then a loud shot was heard, then…silence. Police entered the house and found him dead next to a Kalashnikov, a pistol and a grenade. It is rumored that Selianakis’ suicide was to avoid being arrested again.
The 53-year-old man had linked his name with one of the most famous Cretan vendettas, after he killed Costas Mouzouraki in 1994 for land disputes. He was also accused as the murderer of Costas brother, Panos in 1999 in Peristeri, Athens, since he considered him responsible for the death of his nephew Vangelis.
