Free DVDs of his Oscar awarded documentary about the killing of dolphins were sent to the dwellers of the Japanese village Taiji, by Louis Psychoyios. The Greek director and photographer, wanted to sensitize and inform dwellers of the region on how bad they treat the rest of humanity too with their killing of dolphins. The Greek director paid all the money needed so as every house in Taiji received the film. “The Cove” was awarded last year with the Oscar prize of the best documentary of the year. The film is about a group of activists discovering everything that happens in the Southwestern Japanese village. Despite the fact that the documentary touched thousands of persons around the world, in Japan many cinemas decided not to play the movie. The 53-year- old creator is certain that the documentary was not shown enough in Japan so as to stop the chasing of the dolphins. For that reason, he made sure that DVDs translated into Japanese were given to the 3.500 dwellers of Taiji since the native fishermen don’t seem to stop the dolphin hunting differently. Mr. Psychoyios stated about his decision that the dwellers of the Japanese village must know everything that every other person around the world knows about Taiji. The aim of the director is not to criticize the Japanese people. In fact, as he said, he believes his movie is a “love letter” to them.
