Greek Finance Ministry Denies Reports Of Euro Zone Exit Plan

Greece’s finance ministry Friday dismissed a report in a German news magazine which asserted the country was considering leaving the euro zone and abandoning Europe’s common currency.
In a brief statement, the ministry lashed out at the report, calling it a “provocation” that undermined Greece’s efforts to fix its public finances and reform its economy.
“The report regarding the forthcoming exit by Greece from the euro zone, beyond the fact that it is untrue, is written with inconceivable frivolity given that fact that it has been repeatedly denied by the Greek government as well as the other governments of the European Union,” the statement said.
“Such reports are a provocation and undermine the efforts of Greece and of the euro, and serve speculators,” the statement added.
Late afternoon Friday, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported on its website that euro zone finance ministers were scheduled to hold a meeting later that evening in Luxembourg to discuss worries over a possible exit by Greece from the euro zone.
