Olympians Kenteris & Thanou Sentenced to 31 Months in Jail

Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou were finally found guilty in the sensational case of the motorcycle accident just before the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The court decided that the accident never happened and that it was a false excuse for their missing a doping test. Seven doctors working in KAT General Hospital and two other witnesses were also found guilty of making false statements. Their coach at that time, Christos Tzekos, was found guilty of possession and trafficking of forbidden substances. The two athletes were sentenced to a suspended 31-month jail term and Tzekos to 33 months in jail. The doctors and the witnesses were handed sentences of between 6 and 15 months. The defence of the sprinters and their coach asks for clemency, claiming that they have offered a lot to the country and that it is disgraceful that such decisions be made for Olympic champions.
