Greek Police Fire Tear Gas at Demonstrators

Greek riot police fired tear gas at dozens of leftist demonstrators in the centre of Athens on Wednesday, as thousands of striking Greeks marched through the centre of Athens to protest against EU/IMF-prescribed austerity.
The clashes came during a 24-hour general strike that brought most public services and trains and island ferries to a halt, grounded flights   for four hours and also disrupted public transport throughout the city.
Thousands of people took part in what started out as peaceful rallies and demonstrations across Athens, police said. However, young youths and anarchists intent on violence, threw petrol bombs and stones at police,  disrupting the protest and injuring 14 demonstrators and a police officer.
24 people were arrested in what is becoming a common occurrence during recent protests. Previous demonstrations have also been marred by violence.
More and more Greek citizens in Greece and abroad question the ability of the Greek government to run the country. They strongly reject and condemn the harsh austerity measures and want to see better handling of the economic crisis.
