Nationals Living Abroad with Greek Property Have Additional '11 Taxes Imposed

Greeks living abroad have a tax  imposed with their 2011 tax return. Those who have a home, apartment or house, purchased or inherited in the past and that had not been rented during the year 2010, will be taxed 5% on a notional amount and as if they had income in the following range: up to 80 sq.m with 30 Euros per sq.m. From 80-120 sq.meters with 50 Euros per sq.m and from 120 sq.m or more with 80 Euro per sq.m. Property owners will not be able to just pay the amount of 170 Euros since they have a home in Greece, as it is considered that they came to Greece to stay.
The Tax Office will tax them with the cost of living in Greece, that is 3,000 Euros for unmarried citizens and  5,000 Euros for married ones. So, they will be taxed with another 150 or 250 Euros. If they also have a car, let’s say of 1200 cc, this is calculated with the value of 3,000 Euros and they will be taxed with another 150 Euros. In total for all married persons, a tax of 570 Euros will be issued. It is very possible that many Greeks living abroad are not informed about this new law and they may be exposed as tax evaders.
