Linguistics Professor Babiniotis Believes "Greeklish" Alienates Youth

Professor of Linguistics, Georgios Babiniotis, highlighted the risk of “alienation” from the impression of Greek words, thanks to the increased use of Greeklish.
Addressing a conference organized by the Institute for Regional Press in Chania, the former Dean of Athens University, stressed the need to support Greek language in terms of quality, while he stated that in days of crisis we must turn to the best our land has to offer, i.e. our culture, tradition and language.  He added that “Language is not merely a tool. It is our history, our thoughts, our mindset, our identity. Above all language is a virtue”.
In regard to the widespread use of Greeklish (i.e. Greek typed in Roman characters) through mobile texting and online communication, on behalf of Greek youth, Mr. Babiniotis stressed that: “Greeklish is the best way of alienation from a word’s visual impression. We have Greek fonts and we can make use of Greek fonts, through online and electronic means, as they possess the advantage of giving us an image of the word, a visual impression, and familiarize us with the actual spelling of the word and its meaning”.
