Two Parliamentary Resignations Rock the Government

Floridis

George Floridis, a 55 year old former deputy Finance Minister and deputy Hector Nasiokas both resigned from their positions in the government on Thursday. The move makes it increasingly unclear whether Papandreou will be able to form a new cabinet and get the crucial austerity package he desperately seeks. Although, the two lawmakers are expected to be replaced by other party members from their constituencies, former finance minister Stefanos Manos believes it will be virtually impossible for the country to stay afloat among all the confusion and disarray in the government. He stated: “It will be very hard to find good people to form a government now. They don’t trust the Prime Minister after all the flip-flops he has made.” “Who will make privatizations now in all this turmoil?”
George Floridis on his resignation, launched an attack on the government, claiming in a two-page letter that Only a national salvation  could secure political stability… but the leadership of the two main parties proved unequal to the task.” Floridis was  referring to failed talks at a unity government between Papandreou and main opposition leader Antonis Samaras.  Nasiokas, stated: “Today I will submit my resignation to the parliament chairman.” “It’s the least I can do to break the current deadlock.”

The new government is expected to be sworn in on Friday and they are expected to face a confidence vote late on Tuesday, a parliamentary aide told Reuters. With 155 of the chamber’s 300 seats, the ruling PASOK party is currently expected to approve it.
World stocks hit a three-month low on Thursday, the euro slumped to a one-month trough and top-rated government bonds rose as concerns intensified that the lack of a deal on Greece’s debt might trigger more market turmoil.
