Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Suggests How to Attract Tourists

Many Hollywood stars have chosen Greece for their vacations this summer and that’s the best advertisement for the Greek islands. Catherine Zeta Jones with Michael Douglas, Goldie Hawn with Kurt Russell and Shakira with Gerard Pique have already visited Mykonos and Skiathos this summer, and Greece is expecting  many more celebrities to arrive.
According to the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, George Nikitiadis, the Ministry is proceeding to take six steps to attract ”rich” tourists to Greece and in particular, it is  in contact with major corporations around the world which reward their best retailers annually, offering among others, high level vacations to various tourist resorts in the most expensive hotels.
It also looks for ”wealthy”  tourists from the USA, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, Japan, through contacts that it makes with closed clubs, in which these tourists are members, in Europe, America and Asia. Each visitor wants to ensure the absolute confidentiality of the hotel  that he/she chooses.
As Mr. Nikitiadis stated,  ”the goal of the Ministry is to raise the quality of services. The VIP tourists want to enjoy VIP services. From the simplest to the most complex services. They want to be able to land in their private plane, to travel by helicopter, to have limousines at their disposal, or even a car with a chauffeur. Creating high-quality, 4 or 5 star tourist residences will also attract wealthy tourists. The construction of golf courses could be one more way to attract tourism in Greece. Golfers are the next category of tourists, after tycoons that spend the most on their holidays. The cost of their stay per day starts at 1,000 euros and can be much higher than that. So we need to create golf courses in the country. Finally, cruises, along with the low-cost airlines boost tourism with visitors who spend more than tourists that tour operators tranfer with charter flights.”
Note that this year the tourism market expects an increase in arrivals over 10% and an increase of tourism revenue by 1.5 billion euros
(-500 million euros last year).
