No Shelter from the Chemical War in Central Athens

With the smell of tear gas still hanging strongly in the air, Syntagma Square and its surrounding streets are showing signs of having been engaged in chemical warfare. Voilent scenes caught on international webcams situated on rooftops, showed terrified citizens and tourists fleeing the area as protesters and riot police rampaged through the city center. Throughout the day and well into Wednesday evening, fires still raged and angry protesters still fought with police.
Earlier, smoke and gas pervaded buildings and Syntagma metro station, resulting in hundreds of people being trapped inside. Around 30 people were taken to hospital with expiratory problems and guests staying at the luxury hotel ‘King George’ had to be evacuated. Just a few minutes away, a fire broke out in the building housing Syntagma’s post office.
The chairman of the pharmacists Association visited the smouldering area to ask riot police to stop using tear gas and other chemicals. However, the situation just became even more out of control.
Thursday will most certainly see more voilent protests as the second vote goes ahead on the austerity bills demanded by international lenders.
