George and Panayiotis Angelopoulos have walked away from the Olympiakos Piraeus Basketball team and basketball in general leaving a dramatic statement and a trail of unhappy fans all over the country. In an emotional announcement on 27, June, the brothers stated,
“All these years we have been fighting against a system that stubbornly refuses to give in, constantly undermining our efforts to give back to our fans and our team, that which they so clearly deserve.
“It is with the aforementioned in mind and already having reached our ethical, logical and legal limits that we have decided to walk away in disgust from our Olympiakos team and Greek basketball in general. We would like to thank all of those who believed in us, supported us and fought with us”.
After a 7 year involvement with the Olympiakos Piraeus basketball team, their announcement has come as a terrible shock to everyone connected to the world of basketball. Fans and supporters of the two brother’s, set up a rally on Facebook, on 30, June. The group led by “Gia Panta Sto Limani Aggelopouli” are hoping to convince them to change their minds and return. Hopes of this happening though remain dismal and as yet, there has been no statement concerning prospective buyers.
