Crowd Call for Referendum on President Christofias

The largest demonstration against a government in Cyprus ended peacefully at 11pm last night, with demonstrators calling for a referendum on whether President Christofias should remain in office. Around 13,000 people of all ages gathered at the palace gates, with crowds sprawling into all connecting roads. From early evening police set up checkpoints at all roads leading to palace, while the gates of both entry and exit were locked with a thick steel chain. The protesters hung banners with the names of 13 victims of the deadly explosion in Mari below which candles were lit.
People shouted slogans such as ”Christofias Junta” and ”Down with Christofias”. One banner featured a photograph of the president and read ”Wanted for crimes against the people”.
Other demonstrators held inflatable bananas chanting ”banana republic.” One sign pinned to the wall of the palace read: ”These clowns have made us a banana republic.”
