Construction of the mosque in the Votanikos region of Athens was officially announced, with the amendment in question included in the bill of the Ministry of Environment, as the European Union and the Muslim community of Greece put pressure on the country for its construction. Although plans to build a mosque have been underway since the beginning of 2000, construction never moved past the planning stage due to various problems and reactions.
The Greek state will undertake construction of the mosque, which will house more than 500 Muslims, under the scope of the Public Investments Programme of the Ministry of Education and will cost 15 million euro. A non profit legal public entity will be established for the management of the mosque.
