Striking Taxi Drivers Offer Free Trips to Tourists

Striking taxi drivers offered free trips to thousands of tourists on Tuesday, taking them to archaeological sites as part of a three-week protest at government plans to deregulate their trade, while others took part in more conventional protests.
Beginning at dawn, taxi drivers periodically blocked the road leading to the Transport Ministry in support of their three-week strike.
In the northern port city of Thessaloniki drivers set a taxi on fire as they marched through the city center.
Thousands of holidaymakers have been affected by the strike, as major roads to ports and airports were blocked.
In an effort to deflect criticism that their strike is harming Greek tourism at a critical time for the debt-ridden country, taxi drivers offered free rides to cruise ship passengers from Patras port in western Greece to historical sites and landmarks.
On the southern Mediterranean island of Crete, taxi drivers occupied the entrance of the archaeological site of Knossos, allowing visitors free access.
The Supreme Court has ruled that any taxis caught blocking access to ports and airports would have their licenses revoked, but the measure has yet to be applied.
