Lack of Blood for Transfusions in August

According to e-thessalia.gr, the biggest drop in blood at blood banks is observed in August. The volunteer blood donors decreased by 30% as most of the people are on vacation.
However, due to the increased number of car accidents that take place during this high rate of tourists period, there is a greater demandĀ for blood.
People suffering from Mediterranean Anemia are one of the most sensitive groups of people. During the summer, they are not adequately transfused and may even have to search themselves among friends and relatives to find volunteers.
In order to raise awareness, announcements have been published at police stations andĀ the Public Power Corporation in the region of Magnisia, where people go every day to find more donors.
At the hospital of Volos, 12.000 units of blood are needed each year. 7.000 units are given by relatives and the rest by volunteers.
