Cohabitation Not a Fair Solution!

Representatives of the gay organizations stated about the new reforms of cohabitation that it is not a fair solution from the government.

This cohabitation reform is a step ahead as to promote equality of the couples but according to gay and lesbian organizations, this is a step without courage because according to them the only equal action would be a marriage license.

This license only assures equal rights concerning medical care, heritage issues, tax system, and family issues.

In the past, there has been made many steps concerning the equality of the couples both from PASOK and ND. Those steps had not led anywhere while gays and lesbians claim that discrimination still exists.

Many European countries have legalized the marriage of gay couples. Whilst the legal system in Greece regarding this issue is proceeding really slow, more is excepted from the Minister of Justice, noted a representative of a lesbian organization.

The lesbian and gay couples ask for the same rights regarding parenting and adoption of a child.

Currently in Greece, according to data, 120 lesbian families have adopted children in 2010.

Representative of the Lesbian Equal Organization stated that the law stigmatized couples and their children, leaving them feeling isolated bearing the weight of social prejudice. According to law, a lesbian is legally a parent only after 18 years of parenting and only if the child consents. The representative noted that the social parent is not going to be recognized as a parent by social services, hospitals, or schools so the child is going to be unprotected.
