Makis Psomiadis Finally in Hands of Police

After month-long and coordinated investigations led by the Antiterrorist Unit, fugitive Makis Psomiadis was finally arrested in the south suburbs of Athens. Psomiadis, owner of Kavala FC, was wanted for his direct implication in the match-fixing scandal that broke out some months ago and set on fire Greek soccer and its fans.
In particular, arresting Psomiadis was the end result of the united actions of the Antiterrorist Unit and Attica Police, who tracked him down through his mobile phone, which Psomiadis used twice in the past couple of days in order to communicate with his son.
During his conversations, Psomiadis brought up facts concerning the soccer team of Kavala, which has been relegated to D’ regional soccer category.
Policemen raided at 12 PM a detached house located on the junction of Electra and Antheon Strees  in Mavro Lithari, in the area of Anavyssos, Athens.
Makis Psomiadis was found staying alone in the house and did not resist the authorities at all.
A warrant had been issued for his immediate arrest by an Athens Examining Magistrate on the accuse of setting up an extensive match-fixing network with links in seven other countries, including Cyprus. 2o more persons have been already arrested for the same offense.
When the scandal first broke out, the case was assigned to the Organized Crime Unit. The police had taken into custody former Olympiakos FC owner and Super League president Vangelis Marinakis, Olympiakos Volou FC president Achilleas Beos and Helioupolis FC president Giorgos Tsakogiannis, who today are detained for illegal betting.
Tomorrow morning Psomiadis will be brought to the Public Prosecutor, accused of blackmail, fraud, active bribery, protection offering, illegal betting and several other offences of the Greek Penal Law.
