Rise of Liver Cancer in Greece

A rise of liver cancer has been noticed during the past ten years in Greece as well as worldwide. According to scientists, a great part of the phenomenon in Greece is ascribed to immigrants coming from countries with high rates of Hepatitis.
Experts distinguish between two types of cancer. For the first case, surgery is preferred if the tumor is operative. If the tumor is non-operative, there are other alternative treatment options, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or microwaves.
In the second case and especially with liver tumors originating in the digestive system, new surgical techniques are the basic treatment process in specialized medical centres.
According to statistics, more than 500 liver resection surgeries have been undertaken at the Surgical Clinic of the Konstantopouleio Hospital (Agia Olga) in Athens during the past decade. In fact, the Clinic serves as a Reference Centre due to the constant rise of liver cancer incidents.
