Rescue of Illegal Immigrants Southwest of Zakynthos

A rescue attempt was completed earlier today at about 90 nautical miles southwest of the island of Zakynthos.
65 Afghan and Kurd illegal immigrants were boarded on a small boat that was most probably trying to reach Italy, when for so far unknown reasons it started sailing adrift in the Ionian Sea.
Two of the immigrants were found dead and one is still missing.
A Super Puma helicopter aided the efforts of the rescue teams and gleaned 30 persons, while the boat with the remaining 32 immigrants was tugged to Zakynthos port by a freighter that was sailing nearby. The Coast Guard cutters have also rushed to the area where the boat was located.
