Riot Police Units Injure 8-Year-Old Girl on Sunday Rally

Greek public opinion is shocked after a father accused the units for the reinstatement of order (MAT) of having hurt his little daughter during a rally last Sunday in Syntagma Square, Athens.
The incident occurred while “desperate” citizens and members of the movement “I don’t pay” were restrained by MAT units and tension escalated.
The photo of the 8-year-old girl crying is all over the web and her father, VP of ADEDY (the Union for public Workers), Mr. Vrettakos told Eleftherotypia that his daughter asked him why the officers were hurting them and he did not know what to answer.
According to the daily newspaper, Mr. Vrettakos attended the demonstration with his family and not as a member of the Civil Servants’ Union.
He said that MAT forces attacked the demonstrators for no reason at all, merely because they wanted to scatter the people from their meeting point.
“They wanted us off the pavement. They wanted out to leave the place. They started moving against us swearing, hitting, yelling and pushing us violently backwards all the time. One of the officers hit my daughter in the jaw line and she started crying. I took her in my arms and tried to leave the place. I was outraged and my Melina was scared to death”, explained Mr. Vrettakos to Elftherotypia.
The girl was examined by a doctor while Mr. Vrettakos expressed his wonder on how it is possible for police forces to overlook a little girl and injure her. He also said that he does not understand why MAT units are showing such a violent attitude towards Greek people protesting for their social rights.
