Dietitians Recommend Cretan-Mediterranean Diet for a Healthy Heart

According to WHO, cardiovascular diseases are the cause of death for 17.5 million people annually. Every 4 seconds, a heart attack takes place somewhere in the planet. However, cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by following a heart-healthy lifestyle. One of the main strategies to achieve this is through proper diet, which according to dietitians is the well-known traditional Mediterranean or Cretan diet.
For the occasion of Heart Week 2011, the Cyprus Dietetic Association (CydaDiet) offers people recommendations and advice on proper nutrition given the fact that the heart has needs of its own.
Dietitians point out that research has shown the credit effects of traditional Mediterranean cuisine on the decline of cardiovascular diseases incidence. The right and adequate information on healthy heart diets is crucial in order to both prevent and face any cardiovascular diseases.
Experts suggest following 7 steps to help our hearts live longer:
–       Eating more vegetables and fruit on a daily basis
–       Choosing low-fat protein sources, such as lean meat, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products and egg whites
–       Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
–       Eating more nuts and whole grains
–       Drinking red wine and beer in moderation
–       Using salt in moderation
–       Choosing desserts of low fat, such as jelly, honey, tahini (sesame paste), sweet preserves of fruit and dark chocolate in moderation
