Mayor of Thessaloniki Feels Closer to Turkey than Germany

“I feel much closer to Turkish people than to German”, said Yiannis Boutaris, Mayor of Thessaloniki during his interview.  “I don’t have much in common with a German but with a Turk I actually have a lot. First thing first, we should let go of our mutual hate and recognize the fact that Greeks and Turks are people sharing common land, history and lifestyle” added the mayor.
Mr. Boutaris also referred to the municipality’s plans for establishing a deeper and more effective Greek-Turkish approach. “We, as the Municipality of Thessaloniki, have many plans in store. Some of them are almost concluded. One of our plans is called the ‘Ottoman Sightseeing Tour’. In this case, we locate historic monuments and buildings, such as the Turkish bads (hamams), and place a sign on them indicating their ottoman origin. Within another programme called “One Weekend in Thessaloniki” we wish to organize cultural activities and shopping capabilities”.
Furthermore, Mr. Boutaris told journalists about the municipality’s plan of organizing a Boat Race between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. “We also want to plan a Bicycle and an Antique Cars Race between the two cities. In this way, we hope to show both people how much they have in common”.
