Start of Most Difficult Week for Government

This week will be the most difficult one for the government of Papandreou with strikes and demonstrations across Greece. The so-called multi-bill will in fact be put to the vote in the Greek Parliament on Thursday, at the height of strikes, but also during the peak of ”agitation” inside the ruling socialist party Pasok.
The signing of a letter by three Ministers, Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou, Health Minister Andreas Loverdos and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giannis Ragusis, has increased opposition. In this letter, the Ministers ask all the party’s MPs to support the Premier, but also launch not too well veiled messages against some of their colleagues in government.
Today Papandreou will be received at 12.30 pm by Greek President Karolos Papaoulias. A Council of Ministers meeting has been scheduled later, ahead of the European Summit of October 23.
