EU Lawmaker Asks the Repeal of Anti-Gay Law in Northern Cyprus

EU legislator Marina Yannakoudakis asked the repeal of an anti-gay law in the Turkish occupied North Cyprus while meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.
Mrs. Yannakoudakis, a Conservative Party member of the European Parliament for London raised the issue after the recent arrest of former Greek Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris in the North on suspicion that he tried to have gay sex.
On Thursday, a Turkish Cypriot court charged and released the 65-year-old Sarris on €46,ooo bail, who was set to appear before a judge next month.
According to an anonymous official source, Eroglu said he would sign the repealing of the anti-gay law if his Parliament were to pass such a bill. However, no such bill is pending at the moment.
Mine Yucel, a Turkish Cypriot social activist, said that homosexuality is still considered a taboo by many residents of her part of the island. “It’s basically outrageous that we have these laws in this century,” said Yucel.
