The Greek Composers’ Union in collaboration with the Hellenic-American Union, the Hellenic American Inc., and the Association of American Universities’ Graduates are organizing a special concert to mark the 50 years from the death of the internationally renowned Greek composer and conductor Dimitris Mitropoulos (1896-1960).
The concert will be hosted at the Hellenic-American Union’s Theatre on November 10, located at Massalia 22 Street, Kolonaki, Athens.
This tribute to Mitropoulos will include a lecture on Dimitris Mitropoulos and his work delivered by Musicology Professor of Athens University Mr. Kostiou, as well as a concert featuring compositions of the deceased composer based upon the poetry of C.C. Cavafis. The orchestra will be conducted by Tassos Apostolou (bass-baritone), Stella Tsani (violin soloist) and Vicky Stylianou (piano).
Dimitris Mitropoulos is one of the most prominent Greek music figures that gained international recognition during his time and afterwards. He died in Milan, Italy at the age of 64 of heart failure, while rehearsing Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony.
