Greek Tragedy Turning Into Comedy: Greek Finance Minister Against the Referendum

Evangelos Venizelos

The Greek tragedy is clearly turning into a comedy (for the Europeans that is  because for poor Greeks it still remains a tragedy). At quarter to five in the morning, right after he returned from Cannes and landed in Athens,Evangelos Venizelos, Greek government vice president and Finance Minister  issued a press release basically saying, he’s against the referendum!
Just a couple of hours earlier, right before the two men board the same plane to Athens, the Greek PM, had announced that the referendum will take place on Dec. 4.
In his statement Mr. Venizelos said that what Greece needs is national unity and not a referendum and called the opposition parties to cooperate with the government in order to save the nation.
“Greece’s position within the euro area is a historic conquest of the country that cannot be put in doubt. This achievement by the Greek people cannot depend on a referendum,” “What really matters right now is the sixth loan tranche” he said in his statement.
