A 56-year-old doctor running a private clinic in Larnaka was arrested with the charges of rape, using anaesthetic to commit a crime, sexual exploitation of adults and possibly minors, and reckless and negligent acts, after a 26-year-old woman filed an official complaint at to her local police office.
The young woman accused her gynaecologist of sexual abuse while she was undergoing an examination. According to her testimony, the doctor used drugs to sedate her and when she woke up she found him naked on top of her. The doctor told her she had been suffering from anaesthetic hallucinations but the young woman was not convinced.
State pathologist Eleni Antoniou had examined the 26-year-old and said that the only signs of a medical operation on her dated back three years when she had given birth, reported CyprusMail.
Police have confiscated four computers, mobile phone memory cards and photographs of the gynaecologist’s patients found in the possession of the sleaze doctor.
POLICE spokesman Michalis Katsounotos confirmed yesterday that of 36 cases under investigation involving the 56-year-old gynaecologist, 22 testimonies have been collected so far. Two of them actually belong to patients of his that had been underage when attacked.
Soon after the case was made public, it was also made known that a complaint had also been filed about 18 months ago but was not pursued due to lack of evidence.
According to CyprusMail, although police have said the doctor is in custody and no longer a danger to patients, the public, women especially, have been demanding to know his identity so they can determine whether or not they have been victims.
The head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society, Marios Liasides, called on the authorities to name the 56-year-old doctor on October 28.
The doctor has been remanded for another eight days and is faces financial penalties, a possible jail sentence, and the withdrawal of his medical license.
