Samaras Expels Chatzigakis Over Far-Right Comments

ND leader Antonis Samaras showed the door earlier today to one of  ND’s oldest members, Sotiris Chatzigakis.
Chatzigakis said earlier today that  “There are far-right micro droplets in the New Democracy party operating under the banner of the popular right… New Democracy is a big, national, middle-class, European party with many currents. It contains the popular right, the liberal right and the middle ground. That is the New Democracy that Constantine Karamanlis built and we are not going to let anybody change it.”
In a statement, Samaras said that Chatzigakis’ comments not only  insult ND and its MPs but also go against the party’s constitution by suggesting there were several groups within New Democracy. The ND leader even went a step further suggesting that the Trikala MP would probably  have to face a disciplinary committee to decide whether he would also be expelled from the party as well as the parliamentary group.
But Sotiris Chatzigakis is not Samaras’ only problem. Lawmaker Panos Kammenos, part of what Chatzigakis characterised as “far-right micro droplets” described the coalition government as a “junta” over the weekend and made clear that he would not back the interim government in a confidence vote on Wednesday.
