PPC GENOP Workers Cut Electricity in Health Ministry

PPC GENOP, a Greek public electricity workers’ union has symbolically cut the electricity in the Health Ministry building in Athens to protest for unpaid state bills to the utility.
A union statement says the four-hour power cut was decided as the ministry owes the Public Power Corporation 3.8 million Euros and the total state debt to PPC lies about 141 million Euros.
In this way the PPC workers’ union is protesting against the new property tax that is being collected through household electricity bills _ with people who do not or cannot pay facing the prospect of having their power supply switched off.
Head of GENOP PPC Mr. Fotopoulos told the media that it is outrageous for the state to ask hard working people, low-wagers, unemployed, pensioners and striving families to pay the new tax on time, while it owes PPC so much money.
Furthermore, Mr. Fotopoulos has announced that GENOP PPC will resist cutting the power supply in the houses of unemployed, pensioners and low-paid people.
Unpaid bills are estimated at the present at about 856 million Euros and are expected to rise further after the new property tax. GENOP warns that this skyrocketing of unpaid debts is a financial threat to PPC.
