Papandreou Defends Respect for Commitments

Ahead of the Euro Group meeting and the likely concession of the 6th 8-billion euro aid tranche to Greece, former socialist Premier George Papandreou sent two letters last night regarding the conditions that come with the loan.
The first letter was sent to the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the Euro Group Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi and the general director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde.
The second letter was addressed to the leaders of the 26 countries – European Union members and the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy.
Greece, Papandreou writes, has ”avoided a default and has made sure it will stay in the Eurozone, thanks to the solidarity of the citizens of Europe, their parliaments and the European governments, including those of the Directive Council of the International Monetary Fund.”
Referring to the formation of the interim government of Lucas Papademos, leader of the Pasok party, he underlined that ”it enables our country to take the necessary steps to implement the decision of 26 October and the policies leading to that decision and stemming from it.”
