Police Brace for Rallies on Alexis Grigoropoulos Killing Anniversary

Police were on alert in Athens on Tuesday for potential unrest triggered by planned rallies on the third anniversary of the killing of a teenager by a policeman.
Authorities fear that the December 6 anniversary of the shooting of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos in 2008 could spark violent episodes across the Greek capital.
More than 7,000 police officers were deployed as at least two rallies are planned, one by students to start at 12:00 pm (1100 GMT) outside Athens University and a second by anti-establishment protesters later in the evening.
Police have cordoned off much of the city centre and motorists are to be diverted from major thoroughfares for much of the day. Officers were planning preventive searches of suspicious individuals for Molotov cocktails or other weapons.
