A latest tremor of 5.2 on the Richter scale was registered last night off the island of Crete, 46 kilometres south-east of Santorini. The epicentre of the earthquake was located 13 kilometres below the ground.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute says that the quake occurred at 03:33 local time. An initial tremor of 5.3 on the Richter scale had been recorded in the same area yesterday morning.
The residents of Crete reportedly rushed out of their homes in panic as the quake hit at 3:30 am (01:30 GMT). Two people broke their legs after jumping from their second story apartments.
The tremor was also felt throughout the islands of the Dodecannese, the Cyclades, and as far away as the Peloponnese, on the Greek mainland.
Speaking to the Skai radio station, the director of the Institute of Geodynamic Research, Gerassimos Papadopoulos, explained that “two earthquakes often occur within a short space of time,” adding that the latest tremor is not to be associated with the seismic activity registered in recent days in the Santorini area.
