Tax Evader Owes Greek State 952 Million Euros

Number One on the debtors list to the Greek state is Nicolas Kassimatis, a 57-year-old accountant and VAT collector from Thessaloniki with a tax debt of 952 million Euros and previous conviction of tax-related crimes, reported the General Post with the help of Yiannis Koutsomitis.
The names of more than 4,000 tax evaders, who each owe the Greek state more than 150,000 Euros and a total debt of 14.9 billion Euros, have been recently announced by the Greek government, according to eKathimerini.
Kassimatis had embezzled funds from the Greek state by creating “false” companies from 1993 until 2001, when his fraud was exposed and both he and some of his partners were charged.
The General Post report goes on to say that Kassimatis fleed both the trial and the country, and underwent plastic surgery to erase all of his traces, which he definitely managed to achieve, since the police officers who randomly arrested him in 2009 had no idea that this was the man they were once searching for.
According to Efimerida, the defendant is now facing a prison sentence of 15 years, and has suggested that there are many other officials involved in the fraud scheme.
