Greek authorities have declared a state of emergency in the southern part of Greece, where flash floods have caused chaos. Authorities said they had received many calls from owners of flooded homes and businesses in Athens.
“Main streets in Athens were flooded mainly due to clogged manholes. In some suburbs, like Glyfada, the water level reached 40 cm. On Athens coastal main road, Posidonos Avenue, cars, trucks and the tram were jammed as several “water fountains” were sparked in the middle of the road”, as ‘Keep Talking Greece’ reports.
In the morning, thousands of vehicles were lined up to 10 kilometres on the highway of Athens-Corinth and traffic was open only on one lane due to the accumulation of rainwater.
Unprecedented floods covered the plain of the city of Tripoli and the large-scale devastation from the excessively bad weather conditions is particularly evident on crops and farms in the following villages: Kakouri, Niochori and Zevgolatio.
Many people in Tripoli were trapped in their cars or houses and had to be rescued as emergency services struggled to get through.
Moreover, in Kavasila of Ilia Prefecture one man got injured by a falling tree, while in the same region a tree fell on a car but fortunately people on board were not injured. Finally, a part of balcony collapsed in the city of Patras, damaging parked cars in the region.
With the rescue efforts impeded, officials fear many more lives and livelihoods will be affected.
