Unions Call 24-Hour Nationwide General Strike Tuesday

Greece’s two major umbrella unions said Monday they will hold a 24-hour nationwide general strike Tuesday over new austerity measures, and warned that further labor protests might follow.
The strike comes as Greece’s political party leaders are due to resume talks on Tuesday regarding reforms that Greece’s international creditors are demanding in exchange for a new EUR130 billion bailout for the country.
Among the measures being demanded by creditors are steep cuts of around 20% in Greece’s minimum wage, 15,000 layoffs in the public sector, more than EUR3 billion worth of new government spending cuts, and further steps to slash supplemental pension benefits for retirees.
“I call on all the workers to participate in the big general strike tomorrow and express our disagreement, to strongly express our will, to say both within Greece and abroad: enough is enough,” Yannis Panagopoulos, president of private sector umbrella union GSEE, said. “The Greek people are not guinea pigs.”
Following the general strike, GSEE said its executive committee would meet again to discuss further strike action.
