Academy of Athens Calls on EU Commission to Support Greek Research Institutes

The Academy of Athens has notified the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, of the decision of its Senate in a letter, after it had been signed by another nine European Academies of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
In the letter, which was sent on January 30 and was publicized on Wednesday, February 15, the supreme spiritual institution of Greece noted among others: “By recognizing the important role science and technology can play in the development of Greece, we call for the European Commission to immediately implement a special program supporting the academic and research institutes of Greece as well as young Greek scientists”.
The decision of the Academy of Athens was endorsed by Accademia Nationale dei Lincei (Italy), Académie Nationale de Médecine (France), Academia Română, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM), Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Swiss Academies of Sciences and Arts.
President of the Academy for 2011 and professor, Mr. Apostolos S. Georgiadis, had sent a letter to the above mentioned academies informing them on the Greek Academy’s decision.
The decision was also notified to the Greek PM, Lucas Papaademos, the Minsiter of Education, Anna Diamantopoulou, and the Greek members of the European Parliament.
