Vafopoulio Cultural Centre of Thessaloniki to Honor Himarë Women for Promoting Agrotourism

The Vafopoulio Cultural Centre of Thessaloniki is celebrating, on Thursday evening, the International Women’s Day of 2012 with an honoring event for women associations for their social, economic and cultural work.
Among the 9 different associations, 50 women from Himarë will be bestowed with an award for their efforts to become  financially independent and promote the natural beauty of their region by opening a tourist office in their town. The Himarë women began their work in 2004 with the support of the Society of Interbalkan Women’s Cooperation – UNESCO Centre.
The Agrotourism Society of Himarë Women have received 250,000 Euros from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2008 in order to promote the new art of tourism in their region, establish and equip the tourist office, organize seminars on agrotourism and run a stand with traditional products for sale, as explained by Mrs. Nadia Taka from UNESCO to ANAMPA.
37 women of Albanian and Greek origin travelled to Thessaloniki to attend the honoring event.
Although the program finished in 2008, the foundations for the promotion of agrotourism in the broader region of Himarë have been set and the Women’s Society is hopeful it will continue promoting the local products and culture in the future.
