24 Million Euros Discovered in Greek Civil Servant Deposits

According to an article in the Greek newspaper ‘protothema.gr’, Greek inspectors of Public Administration have recently discovered new cases of corruption in Greece after relevant checks of the bank accounts of 13 Greek civil servants.
According to a document of the Ministry of Administrative Reform which “Proto Thema” presented,  people whose bank deposits could not be explained based on their tax income declaration were discovered. Among them is a ministry official whose deposits are 8.9 million euros, a judicial official with 7.9 million euros and several heads of urban and forestry services.
The document was filed to the Greek Parliament after a question from the MP of PASOK Piraeus Manolis Benteniotis, who emphasized the moral and social crisis of Greece, adding that “corruption and the underground economy are soaring”, while he asked for the launch of legal procedures “in order to recover illegal funds and require unlawfully acquired money to be returned to the Greek state”.
The only penalties that have been executed with regard to the suspects to date are disciplinary, while criminal prosecution is still pending.
