The 14th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival Awards

The Greek economic crisis could not overshadow the 14th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which lasted for ten days from March 9 to March 18 and included participants from more than 40 countries. About 185 film productions joined this year’s festival with an important percentage of Greek directors.
On the last day of the Festival, the awards were announced in the following categories:
The Audience Award for a Greek film over 45 minutes went to Greek Angelos Kovotsos for “Encardia, the Dancing Stone”, while the respective award for a foreign film went to Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi for their work “Italy: Love it or Leave it”.
The Audience Award for documentary films under 45 minutes was given to Greek production “The Blind Fisherman” directed by Stratis Vogiatzis and Thekla Malamou, and foreign production “ORA” (Canada) directed by Philippe Baylaucq.
The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award for the foreign production category was presented to Mexican director Jose Alvarez for his 72-minute long “Canicula”, while the Greek documentary feature “Sayome” of Nikos Dayadas won the respective award in the domestic category.
The ERT3 Award for the thematic category of “Society and Environment” was jointly bestowed to Greek director Manos Papadakis for his film “Expropriation”, and Turkish director Ruya Arzu Koksal for “A Few Brave People”. The award included the prize of 1,500 Euros for each film.
The ERT “Doc on Air” Award, recognizing the best project of the European Documentary Network (EDN) Pitching Forum, and including a 7,000 Euro prize, was given this year to “My Journey to Meet You”, directed by Italian filmmaker Marco Simon Puccioni and produced by Simone Catania.
The International Amnesty Award was given to the Iranian documentary production “This is not a Film” directed by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb.
The WWF Award for best documentary film on the interaction between man and nature was given to “Vivas las Antipodas”, a German/Dutch/Argentinean/Chilean production directed by Victor Kossakovsky.
