2012 Dedicated to Greek Composer Manolis Kalomiris

The year 2012, according to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is dedicated to the Greek composer and musician Manolis Kalomiris. The  reason is that by 2012, 50 years will have passed from his death; he passed away on April 3, 1962.
Born in Smyrna in 1883, he had always been a “lover” of music. At the age of 17, he decided not to study what his parents dreamt he would, that is, to become a doctor. After an argument with them about his future career, he left for Vienna, where he studied theory and methodology of piano.
He moved to Russia, where he stayed for almost 4 years. Returning to his homeland, he taught piano classes and tried to establish a “National School,” similar to other European schools. He was also the founder of the National Music School of Greece.
Apart from a successful musician, he became a famous author of pedagogical books, always related to music and its theoretical approach. As a writer, he was awarded the Greek Award for Literature and Arts.
A requiem mass took place this morning at the A’ Cemetery of Athens, in Kalomiris’ memory.
On Thursday, April 5th, at the headquarters of the National Music School of Greece, a speech about the composer’s achievements will be presented. After the speech follows a presentation by Filippos Tsalachouris about the honored person’s works, and a concert with some of his compositions.
There will also be an exhibition, displaying archives owned by the “Manolis Kalomiris” Organization.
The entrance is free.
