Production of Where Greek Souvenirs are Made is Up for Debate

When someone visits a new place, it’s only natural that he’ll buy a souvenir in order to have something to remember the place and the mood he experienced when he visited it. Visitors always look for items that are typical of the destination’s culture. But what does Greece really have to offer to the average tourist?
Most souvenirs inspired either from the Greek or Mediterranean culture are usually made in countries of the Far East i.e. knitted pillows depicting traditional themes are ordered and imported from India, silky items from Kalamata are made in China, etc.
Ceramic and plastic figurines are not only cheesy but look very cheap, such as Priapus figurines that are not even real antiquity replicates.
The actual replicates sold in Greek museums are not high quality either. They no longer present their former aesthetics, the color is clumsily painted and the details are barely visible as if they were sculpted on soap that’s started to melt.
It’s actually sad that such items aimed at representing and reminding the Greek culture and the Greek past have become so cheap and uncared for; we shouldn’t lose our sense of aesthetics.
The museums and souvenir stores should try to find new suppliers, perhaps Greek students of Arts or Ceramic schools. That would allow museum visitors and tourists to buy purely Greek items.
