The center to accommodate illegal immigrants in Amygdaleza, Athens is expected to start functioning in two days since the work is almost complete. Photos show that everything is almost ready, including the concentration spaces that will accommodate the first 200 immigrants.
According to the Greek authorities, Amygdalzea consists of three wings and a total of 52 living spaces, each of which can accommodate four people. The first and the second wing will have 16 and the third will have 20 living spaces. Every container will have two spaces. In one, there are four beds – bunk beds and in another is the dining room. There will be a bathroom with two showers and two toilets, air conditioning and heating.
Each wing will have its own yard of 500 square meters with a water cooler and fixed benches while all three wings will be divided by barbed wire of 2.4 meters.
So far, a part of the center has been completed and 200 individuals to be deported will pass through its gates beginning May 15.
The external guarding duties have been undertaken by police and the interior guarding will be taken up by private unarmed security guards.
Public opinion in Greece is still torn apart in regard to Amygdaleza, while citizens continue protesting against it, claiming that their quality of life will be completely destroyed.
