Olympiacos FC President Quits Over New Greek Sports Law

Οlympiacos FC is not only looking for a new coach but also for a new president, since Evangelos Marinakis announced his decision to quit due to the new Greek government sports law.
Marinakis has been president of the team since December 2010. He revealed his decision to resign from his position to the International Symposium of the team’s organized supporters.
The reason behind his decision lies with the new sports law introduced by the Greek government recently, which has caused some controversy in the sports world. According to the new law, team presidents will also face criminal liability in case of violent incidents and extremities.
However, Marinakis noted that he will continue his work in Olympiacos FC as the major shareholder and sponsor of the team.
“The new sports law is a monstrosity. It provides for irrational criminal liabilities on behalf of the presidents and members of the Boards of the teams over the slightest misconduct. I want to be in the front line and give up a daily fight for the future of Olympiacos,” stated Marinakis, adding that he does not like formalities nor does he want to live and act with the fear of the new law.
The new president to take over the vacant position in Olympiacos FC will be someone close to Marinakis, whom he will be able to trust with every step that he makes. This new leadership scheme distinguishing between the roles of the major shareholder and the team’s president is followed by the majority of European football clubs.
