Thessaloniki Celebrates International Museum Day 2012

In honor of International Museum Day 2012, the Municipality of Thessaloniki has organized several events along Aristotelous Street from May 18-20.
Museologists, archaeologists and architects invite everyone of Thessaloniki to tour four key-archaeological sites in a 90-minute-walk – the ancient Roman Forum, the Church of Virgin Mary (Chalkeon), the spa center “Paradise,” and Aristotelous Square.
This main topic at this years’ International Museum Day’s is “The Museum in the Center of a Changing World. New Challenges, New Inspirations.”
“This year, due to the financial crisis, we did not have enough money to organize events in the museums, so we thought about going outside the walls of the [Aristotle] University,” explains Matoula Skaltsa, Professor of History of Art and Museology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
“We want to show people what museologists may think about culture in regards to the world, as well as about the monument in regards to the person,” she continued.
The attendants of this year’s festival will have the opportunity to watch a video, presenting and explaining what museums are and what museologists’ duties are, since this sector is not well-known in Greece.
Similar events will also take place in 12 other Greek cities on International Museum Day. Museologists will visit schools to discuss relations between the school and the museum with students.
