International Press Focuses on 'New' Political Figures

The early exit polls, which became public minutes after the end of the voting process, show that the end of the bipartisanism in Greece has come.
New Democracy party appears to be first, though it is not clear yet. To the international press’ surprise, SYRIZA comes second, a party which was part of the Parliament but never had such high voting polls before.
The surprise, however, is that the Neo-Nazi Party Golden Dawn seems to have the necessary votes to enter Parliament.
All this change could not escape the attention of the world’s media.
The Italian Ansa news agency, with an article titled “Greece-early exit polls show New Democracy first,” reports that this may be the first party in the country (17-20%), followed by SYRIZA (15.5- 18.5%), which may have managed to get more votes than PASOK (it was the former first political party in Greece). The Italians say also that, for the very first time, the extreme right party Golden Dawn has relatively high voting rates (6-8%).
Similar reports were published in the Italian La Republicca as well. “Left-wing parties surpass the Socialists,” says the newspaper, continuing with another article titled “Neo-nazis enter the Parliament.” For the Italian journalist, this differentiation shows the anger of the Greeks on the austerity measures.
Washington Post published an article about the Greek elections but it paid special attention to the Golden Dawn party. Jewish paper Jerusalem Post expresses fear concerning the election of the Neo-Nazis (as many characterize this party).
“Victory of New Democracy party” says the Spanish El Mundo, but the increase of the extreme right party’s voting rates and their jeering against some left-wing politicians early in the morning captured its attention.
French Le Monde refers once more to the SYRIZA high percentages and the election of the Golden Dawn. In general, most French journalists feel surprised by the election of the Neo-Nazis in Greece.
