Olympic Flame Reaches Chania

The Venetian port of Chania greeted the Olympic Flame. The flame relay will travel to London on July 27, heralding the 2012 Olympic Games. But people participating in the Olympic flame relay, lit in ancient Olympia, still have many stations to visit.
The Olympic torch arrived in Chania, Crete at 10:30am. Distinguished citizens and representatives of the athletic, social and cultural life of the city transferred the flame in downtown Chania. Many Cretans and tourists gathered to welcome the torchbearers.
“Olympic Games is a way of life, which promotes and harmonizes the body and soul virtues,” said Mayor of Chania Manolis Skoulakis. “By connecting athleticism to culture and education, the Games encourage a way of life based on satisfaction gained through attempt and respect of values,” he continued.
Spyros Zanias, Head of the torch relay in Greece, stated, “Chania today sent the message of the United Nations, which is about peace and truce. Greece screams ‘Peace’ today.”
